K9 is Online

31st March, 2010 by

The official website for the Doctor Who spin-off that isn’t really a spin-off, K9, is up and running. It’s pretty image-heavy, being as it is made entirely of images, so if you’re on a dial-up modem you’re probably somewhere in 1996 and so can’t watch the show yet. But hey, the TV movie, eh? It’s going to be awesome.

The K9 site contains videos, including a look at the opening titles (which, for reasons I can’t quite define, feel incredibly Australian), character and monster bios, and an episode guide. Interestingly, the Monsters page includes what looks like an albino version of the Blowfish alien from Torchwood‘s second series.

Is K9 going to be shit? All signs point to yes, but after reading some of the information provided I’m curious as to how the series will fit into the established Who universe (I refuse to say “Whoniverse” because I’m a pretentious bastard) and that alone is probably enough for me to actively take the time to watch the show.

Oh dear, have I just volunteered URP!’s official unofficial K9 correspondent?

It seems that if the folk at the Radio Times have their way, we won’t actually need to watch the new series of Doctor Who – they’re happy to do it for us. I blame Alison Graham. Anyway, in a big old exclusive – and one that must surely have the editorial staff of Doctor Who Magazine grumbling into their Coco Pops – not only does the new edition contain the first proper pictures of the TARDIS interior, but also a synopsis AND a dialogue extract for EACH and EVERY episode of Series Fnarg. We’re still missing a few titles, but nevertheless, we’re that bit closer to get a sense of how the series as a whole is going to play out. Obviously these are quite vague, but they do come with strong spoiler warnings as there’s probably a few bits of fun that they could ruin for the more staunch ear-fingerers. Read on after the jump for the content very generously transcribed by Venture South of this parish.

But cor, what about the sound of Simon Nye’s episode, eh?

It’s been a bloody busy old weekend, which is perhaps not in the least bit surprising given our current proximity to the new series.  So, let’s have a bit of a summary of what we’ve seen turn up on Jonathan Ross and the BBC’s Doctor Who website.  It’s all quite good.

… AND IT IS FUCKING ACE.

Don’t click the following link if you don’t want to have the look of the TARDIS interior RUINED by the Radio Times before Saturday evening. But you’d be hard-pressed to avoid it as of tomorrow anyway, frankly, so you may as well just have a look now. Go on, click it. It’s there, just below. Click it. You know you want to.

OOH, ISN’T IT BLOODY LOVELY?

The Australian-produced K9, the third Doctor Who spin-off in as many years, has finally been given an airdate. The first episode, “Regeneration”, will be airing on Disney XD in the UK on April 3rd at 4pm, mere hours before the Eleventh Doctor makes his debut. Very clever, Disney. I see what you did there. The second episode airs at the same time the following day.

Meanwhile, over in Australia, K9 also debuts on the 3rd at the slightly sillier timeslot of 9am. A prime slot for the “kids who get up at 7:30am and decide to turn the TV on at maximum volume whilst eating every last fucking Penguin in the cupboard even though it had been made absolutely clear that they were supposed to go in their lunchboxes for school the following week” demographic, but not so great for “longtime fans of Doctor Who who wanted to see what a trainwreck K9 would be but would rather be in bed at 9am, even while their kids are shouting and screaming and eating all the Penguins”.

I’m not making these demographic names up. That’s how Australian TV networks demo everyone.

Oooh, it’s all go.  As we approach the final week before the broadcast, shit’s really gonna start to get real, starting with the obligatory appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross by The New Guy, tonight.  If you think you can sit through Ross constantly mentioning his penis then this will be well worth a look, especially since Matt Smith seems to be an excellent interviewee, and we’ll be getting a clip from Whithouse’s Vampires of Venice!

In other news, the BBC’s Doctor Who site has had a very sexy redesign, to bring it more into line with the BBC’s standard (and excellent) layout.  It’s now much easier to browse around and you will no longer find yourself getting so frustrated you want to smash the designer to pieces with a clay replica of Tim Berners-Lee’s cock.  I really must do an article about all the various iterations of that site over the years.

In other other news, that 1 minute clip of The Eleventh Hour is going to show up on TEH RED BUTTONS from 18:25.  Seb will be abstaining but I’ll probably give it a good watch and post up about it over the weekend, along with every other two-bit Doctor Who blogger in the entire Universe.  Have a nice weekend, everyone, and try not to have bad dreams about cocks, clay-replica or otherwise.

A handful of hi-res trailer screencaps…

Alright, so, when I did a dissection of the two most recent trailers, I was of course basing it on low-quality Youtube footage. But since then, people Better At This Stuff Than Me have been putting higher-quality – much higher quality – screencaps online, and they shed a bit more light on a few aspects raised by that initial discussion. So let’s have a look! Click to make big, and be warned (in case you’re trying to avoid it) that there’s a clearer picture of the TARDIS console after the jump.

Five Years Ago

Five Years Ago

We’re very firmly into “That Time Of Year”, now – the time when information about a new series of Who is leaking into the ether, thicker and faster than even we can keep up with. And this time, the stakes are higher than any time since the show’s revival – essentially, this is a fresh “year zero”, with the added fact that it’s been two years since we had a new full series to look forward to. Simply put, anticipation for the show – in our books, at least, and I’d suspect in many of yours – hasn’t been this high for half a decade. And naturally, it’s got me thinking about the way myself and Capps looked forward to those first RTD episodes, back when we knew so little about what to expect – and sent me digging through old blog posts and emails as a reminder. So join me as I half-inch a set of TARDIS keys and hurl us back to five years ago, March 2005…

Well, if talking about two different things actually classes as a ’roundup’, that is.

First, let’s mop up the last bit of big news that came out of of last Thursday’s press launch that we’ve not mentioned yet, which is the commissioning of a 2010 Christmas Special and series 6 in 2011.  I remember back in 2005 when series 2, 3 and two Christmas specials were commissioned just a few weeks into the airing of series 1.  It was massive, massive news.  Now, however, we’ve fallen into this cosy and slightly dangerous mode of simply assuming, and I think this is why this confirmation hasn’t been met with similar enthusiasm as back in 2005.  This is still a new Doctor with a new team, so it’s lovely to know the absolute minimum we’ve got to look forward to Quite A Lot, because Christ knows what’s going to happen to big budget drama when the Tories get their slimy claws into the BBC’s pocket.

A Great Big Threatening button which, under the circumstances, you might actually want to push. If you’re in the UK you’ll be lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the first minute of “The Eleventh Hour” via the BBC’s Red Button service. It’ll be popping up at various times from this Wednesday until the show’s Easter weekend launch. So far the confirmed times for Wednesday are from 6am to 2pm, then again from 3pm to 5:50pm, and finally from 9pm onwards.

Of course, that minute will probably work its way onto YouTube or some such thing, and the very moment it does I guarantee you one of us is probably going to pick it apart. Or maybe we won’t.
