Character Options come up with more ways to part a Seb Patrick and his money

Hello, Seb.
Hello there, faceless rhetorical device.

Why did you like the Earthshock Cyberman figure so much?
Well, it was in my opinion Character Options’ best and most accurate sculpt to date; and furthermore, a sculpt of a quite brilliant monster design, one that is for me the defining image of what a Cyberman should look like.

Why is that, do you think?
Well, my first experience of Doctor Who was watching season 25, so “Silver Nemesis” was one of the first stories I ever saw. Consequently, all other Cybermen look ever-so-slightly a bit wrong to me. If you say the word “Cyberman”, the ’80s vintage is what I think of.

Ah, but that figure wasn’t from Silver Nemesis, was it?
No, but the designs are similar enough that I wanted it on my shelf. And it’s not as if “Silver Nemesis” is a very good story that I have any particular loyalty to. Hell, it’s not even as if it’s a mediocre story.

So what about this new Silver Nemesis twin pack due out later in the year?
Well, it’s lovely, of course. We get a black-handlebarred Cyberleader (did David Banks have to sign away image rights, I wonder?), tweaks to the costume to make them screen accurate for that story (although honestly, I can’t tell the difference until you put them directly alongside one-another), 1988-era guns, and simply the fact that there are yet more of the things to add to the shelf.

They haven’t got the moon boots, though.
No, that is a shame. And also a reason to have bought an Earthshock Cyberman rather than waiting for a Silver Nemesis one. Got to love the moon boots.

So will you be buying this set?
Well, £25 is an annoying price to pay, considering the fact that you could get two and a half Earthshocks for that instead of just two. But assuming the Southern England McCoy Shortage of 2010 doesn’t strike again… then yes, I’ll probably be buying this.

Excellent.
Well, quite.

Doctor Who : The Adventure Games

This is just absolutely bloody wonderful and phenomenal.

Doctor Who and video games have never got on all that well. The canon basically consists of Dalek Attack (a lovely little PC/Amiga/Speccy/C64 platformer that unfortunately had very little to do with the style or aesthetic of Who itself) and Destiny of the Doctors (an “interactive” CD-ROM adventure that was a nice idea but hampered by frankly woeful execution). Last time it was announced that there was to be a new series tie-in game, we briefly built up hope that we’d finally get the time-travelling point-and-click adventure game that the show so badly deserves, but it ended up being some cheap reprehensible Top Trumps bollocks for the PS2. Indeed, the best that Who has managed in the gaming field have been those free BBC flash games that showed up on the official site during the Eccleston series – of which the best by a considerable margin was that terrifically fun Last Dalek thinger, which saw you playing as a single Dalek wandering around exterminating Van Staten’s minions.

Finally, though, Doctor Who is getting a “proper” computer game. Okay, so it’s not a full-on, commercially-released enterprise, but it’s nevertheless exciting for a number of highly significant reasons:

1. It’s written by Steven Moffat and Phil Ford
2. It ties directly into the series (with the first three of four episodes being released while Series Fnarg is broadcasting)
3. It’s being developed by the people what did Broken Sword
4. It’s FREE.
5. It’s got Amy’s legs in it.

CAN’T. WAIT. Check out the new issue of PC Gamer for more info and screenshots.

I’LL TAKE EIGHT!

I’LL TAKE EIGHT!

The Doctor Who News Page just posted this video about the making of the new Eleventh Doctor action figure. That’s all well and good, but check out this shot from about fifty-six seconds into the video:

The Eighth Doctor. Right there. Right fucking there. Look at him. Just you bloody look. I’ve not seen any pictures of the Eighth Doctor figure yet. This is like putting your hand in your pocket and finding a tenner you forgot you had.

We should just call the site Unlimited Rice Toys and have done with it…

… but sod it, there’s lots of toy news going on, and I like talking about it.

So by the time Matt Smith’s first series is over – or probably even partway through – there’ll be three toys of him out. That’s some kind of record, right?

SO MANY McCOYS

SO MANY McCOYS

Not content with giving us Sylvester in a cream coat with an Imperial Dalek, Character Options are really pulling out the stops to make us want every Seventh Doctor variant going. While the version in the much-fabled 11 Doctors boxset will apparently have a “grumpy” face, a brown coat and no hat, there’s also this little beauty being released – happy face, hat, brown coat, and…

… yes, that’s a Classic TARDIS. Fucking hell. Perhaps a bit too light a shade of blue, but still nothing other than an ENTIRELY ESSENTIAL purchase.

(apologies if this picture’s been around for a while – I know the rumour about the set has been – but I’ve just caught it for the first time, having not previously spotted it on a forum or anything)

YES. YES. OH GOD, YES.

20th February, 2010 by
YES. YES. OH GOD, YES.

Well, this is getting the fuck pre-ordered out of it. If there’s one thing I’ve been desperate for since Character Options started making Bloody Good Classic Who Action Figures, it’s a Sylv. And if there are two things, it’s a Sylv and an Imperial Dalek, what with Remembrance of the Daleks being the bestest Doctor Who story that ever storied (yes it is, don’t argue).

And yes – I know there’s supposed to be an Eleven Doctors boxset coming out later in the year, and that it’ll retail at an incredibly reasonable £50 compared to these Forbidden Planet Exclusive £25 packs (of which I’ve so far only managed to snag one – the Hartnell and Dalek – missing out on Troughtons and Pertwees). But if there’s one Doctor that I’m guaranteed to want to buy twice (especially when the boxset version will probably be hatless, brown-coated and possibly even umbrella-less), it’s this one. Plus, of course, I’d wager this Dalek will only be available in this set, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. And look at the thing – the redone headlights and slitted plunger are in place, and everything.

God, I love Character Options. God, I love toys.

The Worst Doctor Who Toys You’ve Ever Seen

Worse than the five-sided Dapol console? Or the two-armed Dapol Davros? Or the green Dapol K-9? Or the Denys Fisher Cyberman?

Oh yes.

Vigilant Doctor Who news site Blogtor Who have been posting pictures of a forthcoming range of Who Easter Eggs over the last few days, and something instantly struck me about them.  Yes, they’re using the old (pre-resurrection if you want, which you probably don’t) branding.

I realise Easter Eggs are produced and sold well in advance of Easter but excited children gathering around the TV on Easter weekend to (probably) watch the brand new New Who while tucking into eggs plastered with a logo that will be well out of date by then is an odd image.  I know, I know, having Davros and the Daleks next to the New Blue would make no sense but they’re both just as out of date at that horrific taxi logo, anyway.  Why not use The Weeping Angels? Or Stephen Moffat’s beaming face?  Anything to stop those poor confused tykes having something to remind them of the show as it once was when they should be casting off the shackles and getting to know the show all over again.

Join us tomorrow when I’ll probably get unduly upset about something else that doesn’t actually matter.  Unless that rumoured RTD movie starring Tennant is confirmed and then you’ll see me really upset, for much the same reasons only without the delicious chocolate for comfort.
