OOH LOOK HE’S GOT A NEW COAT

So, filming for El Chrimbo Speciale has finally begun, and courtesy of the ever-reliable “alun vega” on Flickr (is this a special account set up of a variety of scoopers to use, does anyone know? Or is it really just one person that takes every good filming picture ever?), we can see that the Doctor has got a SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT NEW OUTFIT:

The jacket looks less like tweed, and more like an ordinary suit-style fabric with a more pronounced striped pattern on it. And the elbow patches are gone. Qualified GallifreyBaseologists have been studying Smith’s arse carefully in an attempt to figure out whether it’s actually longer at the back than the previous one, although I wouldn’t care to speculate on their findings. Meanwhile, in addition, that looks like a new shirt. Bow ties are still cool, though, which is nice.

Is this a Propa New Outfit for series six, then, or just something worn in the Christmas episode for a specific reason? I WONDER. But we already have five different Matt Smith action figures floating around out there – looks like it may soon be time for another.

Seb Patrick once met Paul McGann, who immediately pretended to be Mark McGann. He writes for Den of Geek, BBC America, Film4 and the official Red Dwarf website, among others. He owns over thirty toy Daleks and wishes the Dapol factory tour was still open.

  1. First thought: it looks like the jacket he has in the adventure games which is slightly different to the one we’ve seen on screen.

  2. Also, on reflection, I’m wrong, it does still look like tweed. But it’s definitely a new pattern.

  3. I hope that’s all bollocks, as River Song needs a bit of a break, as do the Cyber Daleks. Also, isn’t the Christmas special 5.14, not 6.0?

  4. Nah, Christmas specials (at least until the The Next Doctor and End of Time, which are special cases) are always the first block of the new series, rather than the final block of the previous one.

  5. Thanks for clarifying that.

If that list is even remotely true, then so are the rumours of the Christmas Carol idea. Adric’s Ghost anyone?

Personally, I’d rather Moffat create some good Christmas Day television without making “Christmas” the main theme again. Indiana Jones seemed like a good idea, but maybe we’ve just been there with The Pandorica Opens. I’m sure Moffat will do good whatever he does.
