S6(32)E11 – The God Complex – Broadcast Discussion

Christ, swimming in the pollution of the Thames really didn’t agree with David Walliams, did it?

Seb Patrick once met Paul McGann, who immediately pretended to be Mark McGann. He writes for Den of Geek, BBC America, Film4 and the official Red Dwarf website, among others. He owns over thirty toy Daleks and wishes the Dapol factory tour was still open.

  1. Last week, my Dad deemed The Girl Who Waited his favourite story within ten minutes.

Last night, I deemed The God Complex my favourite story before the title sequence even began.

    Absolutely brilliant.

  2. A wonderful surprise to find that last week’s excellent episode was matched so soon! The guest characters were very well drawn – maybe the best ensemble of one-off guest characters since Midnight?

One of my favourite things about this episode was watching the Doctor’s reaction to spying Rita as a potential new companion. The fact that he so readily joked about “firing” Amy made a nice contrast with the fact that the episode’s conclusion was all about her.

I don’t really have many criticisms of this episode in itself, but did anyone think it was slightly hurt by following on so soon from the very similar Night Terrors? It was a bit distracting to find myself making comparisons throughout. Both episodes involved childhood fears; the doll’s house and hotel were quite similar Shining-referencing, exit-less locations (this seems to be something of a trend this series, what with the House-controlled TARDIS from The Doctor’s Wife); and the mind control elements of both “praise him” and the doll transformations felt like similar threats. (But this episode really benefited from the fact that “praise him” was much more thoroughly explored than those doll transformations.)

The final shot of the teaser for next week’s episode reminded me of that signature gory moment from Hitchcock’s The Birds…

  3. Is this forum dead :-(

I know Closing Time was disappointing but that used to mean a review would take a while to go up, not the broadcast discussion.

I do hope you keep going with this. It’s the community that’s nice, even if people occasionally don’t have time for anything other than lurk mode.

Anyway, all the best. No worries if maintaining this forum is too much given the other stuff you have to do in life. I couldn’t do it, and please don’t receive my sentiments as some kind of demanding.
